" It is an inexplicable feeling, between so much waiting for two years. The emotion of playing again, seeing new girls and the reunion of the first teammates, the most anticipated day of the year finally arrived!
We have girls with experience and girls who play the sport for the first time, but on both sides there is the feeling of living an emotion of love and passion for the sport. It is beautiful to see how more women come to learn and at the same time break stereotypes. It’s already been 4 years for me of living and feeling the passion for American football. My greatest inspiration is teamwork, the support of women regardless of age, ethnicity or physical appearance and not forgetting the love and dedication that our coaches show us, which together make us feel accepted and admired by this sport." |
Aymara Reyes - A 30 year old mother who works in finance and moonlights as a QB for the Goddesses
You know, I never imagined that I would play American Football or know anything about the sport and now I can’t miss a practice session or watching games. I learned about this sport 6 years ago. I was invited by a co-worker and from that moment I said “This is my sport”.
What inspires me to continue practicing this sport, my team, which has made me believe as a woman in empowering myself and believing in myself, since I believe that American Football helps many women and allows us to contribute to change and the stereotypes that exist in the world and in other disciplines. In these 6 years I have learned several and I have played several positions but currently I play as QB. I feel better than ever for this season since playing with a knee injury (torn meniscus and cruciate ligament). I had surgery in 2021 so the pandemic allowed me to rehabilitate. After almost 2 years without football due to the pandemic, I am excited to know that we will have a season and I know that the Goddesses are coming strong because each of the girls has trained hard to have good results. For me Goddesses is not just a team, each of its members becomes like a family and like all families we walk towards the same goal and I know that those efforts and hard work will give good results for this 2022 season. |

The Leones pride themselves for being a homegrown Tico team with all players being nationals whereas the Toros and several other teams over the years have accepted a few foreign nationals on their teams. It was with great pride that the Leones, a new team at the time won the 2019 Championship.
Toros are the only original team since the sport was established in 2009 competing in the 2022 Championship. A few other original teams still remain in the sport however they are not participating in the Championship this year.
Recently, the Toros dedicated the 2022 Championship season to their first coach and former Costa Rica Federation president (2011-2015), Paolo Vincenzi who passed away last year from cancer.
" Today we have our last training session before the start of the 2022 championship. It is our first tournament without coach Paolo in this world, but we know that Toros and many people associated with American football in Costa Rica will remember him for a long time, which is why we want to dedicate this 2022 championship to our first coach Paolo Vincenci and our players will wear the coach’s victory fist on each helmet. See you always coach, we know that wherever you are you will encourage us! " – Toros Team

It is with deep regret that we report of the sudden passing of Paolo Vincenzi Zúñiga, the founding president of the Costa Rica Flag & American Football Federation and also a coach, who passed away at the age of 52 on Sunday, June 13th, 2021, after a lengthy fight against cancer.
Paolo amassed a commemorative career in the sport starting with acquiring a scholarship in a USA high school as a kicker. Initially, he was scouted by the high school as a soccer player but when the American football coaches saw his footwork skills, they approached him and he was recruited as a kicker.
In Costa Rica, his involvement with the sport kicked off as the first head coach of the Toros team in 2009. The Toros were the undefeated champions and Paolo doubled his role as not only the head coach in that league but also as the kicker. He then founded the American Football Federation of Costa Rica (FEFACR) in 2011 and held the position of president until 2015. FEFACR achieved recognition by induction into the Costa Rican Institute of Sports & Recreation – ICODER and played its 1st national league season that same year. FEFACR went on to become a member of the International Federation of American Football (IFAF).
Although many would agree that his greatest contribution to the sport was as a pioneer in developing youth American football and organized flag football in Costa Rica, Paolo was the greatest advocate for youth players in the country. When most coaches and adult players were only focused on winning trophies, Paolo always had his focus set on developing the youth players, the future generations of the sport, while simultaneously raising the level of play. Many youth players that started under the guidance of Paolo are now accomplished league players.
The football community in Costa Rica will forever be grateful and beholden to Paolo.

Costa Rica: Stacy Quirós
First Female Football Coach In Country
Costa Rica’s Alajuela Pumas F.A. has joined a burgeoning worldwide trend in adding a female, Stacy Quirós, to their coaching staff.
The allure of this beautiful and strategic sport has been captivating the interest of more and more women throughout the world in recent years to suit up as players. For women already playing this sport, they have defied preconceived social norms and have broken down gender imbalance and barriers.
For some female players, like Quirós who have excelled at the sport and want to share their knowledge with others, just as their male coaches selflessly have done for them, the pathway is open for women in this Central American country to pursue coaching.

Alajuela Pumas F.A. formed in February of 2018 as a developmental team, while preparing to be established for the 2021 calendar season. The team will play 2020 jointly with the Southern Knights F.A. from Perez Zeledon as they did for the 2019 calendar season.
Alajuela Pumas F.A. administration welcomes new coach (August 17th)
“We want to congratulate and give a warm welcome to the former Bulldogs Flames F.A. running back Stacy Quirós,
who has been one of the pioneer players in the contact women’s American football league in Costa Rica and now takes a giant step to
double her achievements in the men’s American football league.
Quirós breaks down barriers again becoming the first woman to play the role of offensive assistant coach in the men’s American football league.
“Our organization Alajuela Pumas F.A. is proud of this enormous acquisition and we know that Quirós’ humility, work ethic and focus will bring great
achievements to our team and league. Welcome coach Stacy Quirós!”

The 32 year old Quirós reflects on her football start
“In July of 2018 the Bulldogs Flames F.A. team was created. I was part of the team and also played in the inaugural contact female football league in Costa Rica, which I am proud to mention, I scored the first league touchdown with a 52 yard carry.
“The opportunity with Alajuela Pumas F.A. came when I had the pleasure to meet their head coach, Roberto Moreno. I had a few conversations whereby he opened the doors for me to consider such a challenge and journey. He mentioned that my work ethic, personality and drive would be great in this league.”

Quirós feels she can help the Alajuela Pumas F.A.
“I can help Pumas with my running skills, those being speed and agility development, which are my strength as a running back.
Additionally, my drive, focus, work ethic and plan development are something I take pride in.
“Future goals in football: I think the future is huge with this leap I took and would love to be able to empower, motivate and create
positive change for athletes on and off the field. Also to be able to have growth in this league, both female and male, and create unity in both
to break this barrier of sexism that now exist not only in football but other sports.”

COSTA RICA FOOTBALL LEAGUE - IAAFL
COSTA RICA ENTERS A NEW ERA OF TICO FOOTBALL
The 2019 gridiron season in Costa Rica commenced with a new league and new vision for the future of the sport. The recently established Costa Rica Football League (CRFL) ushered in the National Championship calendar on Sunday, March 3rd, with a renewed spirit of enthusiasm and optimism.
CRFL is now the official national league and became affiliated with the International Amateur American Football League (IAAFL) based in Italy. The mission of the IAAFL is to support the growth and development of American Football nations from around the world. IAAFL is not a federation and has no intention to replace any national or international federations, but rather to support American Football initiatives. IAAFL has collaborated with more than 20 affiliated countries since its inception in 2014 and recently welcomed to their family, Argentina, Uganda and our very own, Costa Rica.
CRFL-IAAFL is determined to take Costa Rican players beyond the usual Central American tournaments and to showcase their talent on new continents. The legal and administrative woes of the past several years that bottle-necked the advancement of the sport in Costa Rica have finally been resolved through the diligent efforts of dedicated individuals.

IAAFL Welcomes Costa Rica
" For me, Walter Sabbioneda, founder of IAAFL, and all of us, we desire that the new CRFL will be successful and that the league will achieve all of its endeavors in the future. IAAFL supports all kind of national and international projects with the goal to develop American Football worldwide, and we are glad to announce that between CRFL and IAAFL exists an accord to collaborate mutually. For this, and other reasons, we are glad to invite players of Costa Rica to participate in the World Sport Games (WSG) 2019 in Tortosa, Catalunya, Spain where for the first time, American Football will be included in the program of the games. Today is born an alliance with brothers and sisters of Costa Rica and IAAFL will be present to help as best as possible, for the “good” development of American Football in this very beautiful country. "
#33 Dani ‘Disco’ Herrera, IAAFL Commissioner for Central America and Costa Rica was quoted as saying,
" We are very happy to form a more professional and structured league, we hope for the support of all national football fans. "

Súper Tazón CR IX: Bulldogs Top the Dragons in OT Victory
Bulldogs F.A., winner of the Asociación de Equipos de Football Americano (AEFA) Western Conference, entered the final on Saturday, May 20th, 2017 with a 7-1 advantage over the AEFA Southern Conference winner Cartago Dragons F.A.. This team ended up with a 6-1 standing because one of the regular season games against the Toros F.C. was rained out twice. Well, more appropriately worded, flooded out!
The final opened under cloudy skies that soon turned to rain at Ernesto Rohrmoser Stadium in Pavas, San José. Multi-colored umbrellas repelled the rain and enthusiastic fans remained in the stands to watch the most revered game of the year in Costa Rica, Súper Tazón CR IX.

With the 2016 champions, Bulldogs F.A., having been fast-tracked to the finals after regular season, and the Cartago Dragons F.A. securing a berth in the final after eliminating their playoff challengers, the Leones Cartago F.C., the battle was on.

" It was a very good experience! As you know, I have just started with what is American football, and to be for the first time in a final, and be the first to score and in such a short time is exciting. We must continue to work hard to be able to perfect in many aspects. But it was a great joy to be the first to score and know that the touchdown helped in a way to make the team be seen as the best in the country. I also thank God and the coaches for trusting me and letting me play. "
3rd Quarter action heated up when Cartago Dragons F.A. QB Michael Maroto #10 scored a 25-yard passing touchdown to WR Jean Paul Marchena #80. Extra point scored by K Victor Coto #40 to tie the score.

Playing a final match is great for any football player in this world! My personal revenge, a dream come true, but to score and to help my teammates do the best they can and push them to break the limits is awesome. I worked hard for this moment. My coach and my teammates believed in me and I did it. Dragons is my family; we fight, we laugh, we cry together, this touchdown is only the beginning. We lost the game but Dragons will rise and will be a champion!
The score remained 7 - 7 in the 4th and the game advanced into OT.
OT excitement prevailed with another passing touchdown from QB Justin McKenzie #2, this time to TE Derrick Fadell #16, catching the pass in the middle of the end zone while taking a hit from behind by a Cartago Dragons F.A. opponent.

" I´m glad to give our Bulldogs family the last touchdown of the season. It is the best feeling I have since I started to play with the team back in 2011. It was a great championship and I´m glad that the sport is growing in Costa Rica and that the level of play gets more and more competitive each year. "

" We did it, we're the 2017 National Champions. All thanks to my staff and players, everyone worked so hard to make this a reality. Bulldogs is now the Team of the Decade with Six National Championship Titles. Hard work, dedication and discipline led us here. I do want to thank the whole Bulldogs Nation for supporting us and believing in our work. GO BULLDOGS!!!!!! #StayTrueToTheBlue #Champions #BulldogsDynasty "
MVP Súper Tazón CR IX - Tackle Cristian Sanchez #96 " Being the MVP for the final game is truly an honor! It means more than a single play in the game. I think the coaches recognized my ‘spirit’ to continue playing despite being in a lot of pain from a mid-game injury. Spirit, is a characteristic also present in many of my fellow Bulldogs. I have played many sports before but with American football I have found a passion that I had never felt before. " Left: Tackle Cristian Sanchez - R: LB Jairo Sandoval |
The Unsung Heroes On The Field
Bulldogs F.A. resident Physical Therapists Jenny Agüero Hidalgo, Gloriana Ordóñez Carboni and Victor Villalobos Madrigal concurred that Cristian Sanchez received a significant knee injury that had him experiencing extreme pain. Sanchez insisted that he wanted to continue playing so they proceeded with the best methods to keep the swelling down and reduce the pain.

Recognition To The Team Captain by Bulldogs F.A. Manager, Alejandro Castro Z.
" It was so very hard losing Tackle Gilbert Chaves #54, a 4 year team Captain to a devastating right knee injury so early on in game week 3. It was a big blow to the team. A true champion, Chaves continued to rally his teammates from the games sidelines while still recovering from corrective knee surgery. "
Closing Game Remarks by Cartago Dragons F.A. HC Mark Sandoval
The truth is these past 3 years have been a great adventure! Loaded with much pressure by the responsibility that implies to be in charge of the physical and psychological health of so many people. But to see the 2 junior championships, 3 divisional championships, 1 NTFL championship and now sub-champions of the 2017 AEFA Súper Tazón CR IX, I feel that we have grown a lot. Even changed some milestones of Costa Rican American football and for that I am satisfied with what has been achieved. Especially because this match has been the best ending in the history of the national sport.
Congratulations to the Bulldogs and all of their staff!

Arch Rivals Go Head-To-Head in Costa Rica
Federación de Fútbol Americano de Costa Rica (FEFACR), one of two leagues in the country, sanctioned the 2016 1st Division National Championship Calendar.
Week 1 game day of the 2016 calendar, Saturday, February 20th, was played at "Cuty" Monge Stadium in San José and was acknowledged by the historic blood churning rivalry that is expected of Costa Rica’s most recognized gridiron turf teams, TOROS F.C., reigning 2015 National Champions and BULLDOGS F.A., reigning runner-up of the west division.
Guts and Glory are always befitting words to describe these two highly competitive teams as the Toros F.C. hold three national championship titles and the Bulldogs F.A. hold four. Both teams are determined to win the Súper Tazón CR VIII on May 7th.
It’s Not Over Until It’s Over
It is an unspoken truth that players from both of these teams always leave their hearts on the field, be it victorious, or defeated. Their hearts beat to the rhythm of relentless blocks and breath gasping catches to the last play of the game as witnessed with the Bulldogs F.A. narrowly defeating the Toros F.C. 27 > 26.
1st Quarter - Opened with a 40-yard rushing touchdown by Bulldogs F.A. prized RB Reinhard Weiss, but experienced a failed extra point. Toros F.C. QB Scott Doherty threw a 30-yard pass to WR Daniel Garita scoring the next touchdown of the game. They too had a failed extra point. Bulldogs F.A. 6 / Toros F.C. 6
QB Scott Doherty #7
Doherty is one of three players still with the Toros F.C. from the first 2009 championship team.
WR Daniel Garita #81
“ This first game against the Bulldogs F.A. was exciting enough to show how much this sport has grown. This is my fifth season with the Toros F.C. and the only team I have ever played. I am a member of a group we call family and proud to be part of the American football history in Costa Rica. “
2nd Quarter - Bulldogs F.A. landed an 18-yard touchdown reception by CB/WR José Gutierrez Rojas from QB Justin McKenzie. Extra point kicked by Eloy Chacon. Bulldogs F.A. second touchdown reception of the quarter was secured by WR Stefano Incer Vincenzi for 8 yards once again from QB Justin McKenzie. Eloy Chacon clinched another extra point for the team. Bulldogs F.A. 20 > Toros F.C. 6
CB/WR José Gutierrez Rojas #4
“ The Bulldogs F.A. vs. Toros F.C. games are the kind of games that nobody wants to miss! They are the most important games of the championship because of the history and the rivalry that is between the two teams. The sport here in Costa Rica has grown a lot in the past years. “
QB Justin McKenzie #2 - Supporting TD Passes
“ I am a fourteen year veteran of the international football community and was excited to celebrate my 400th and 401st career total touchdowns during the game. The pass to Rojas was career touchdown #400 and to Incer was #401. Presently I have 299 touchdown passes, 101 rushing touchdowns and 1 touchdown catch in my international career. “
WR Stefano Incer Vincenzi #22
“ My natural position has always been receiver but I have played as defensive back and running back as well. I felt very confident before and during the game, because of all the hard work that the team and the personnel staff has put into the preparation for us to get into the final, and God willing be champions again. “
3rd Quarter - Bulldogs F.A. RB Reinhard Weiss ran for a 48-yard touchdown with Eloy Chacon kicking his third point of the game. Bulldogs F.A. 27 > Toros F.C. 6

“ We knew the game would be tough and although we were up by a lot in the 4th quarter I told our guys we had to respect the Toros F.C. players and by that I meant not let up on the gas peddle because they are the champs for a reason. As for the team, we put in a lot of hard work and we were prepared. Just need a few more games under our belt as a team to start clicking. I was overall just proud of the team because the Toros F.C. are a tough and very resilient team and we had to play together and there are a lot of new guys that showed up to play in their first big game. To get the WIN was huge for us.” Player of the Game: Weiss concluded 14 carries for 147 yards, 10.5%, 2 rushing touchdowns (40 yards & 48 yards), 3 first downs,1 fumble lost and 1 interception. |
The Kicker In The Kick
Kicker Eloy Chacon, an original Bulldog, has been with the team for eight years and is recognized as the best kicker. With his precision skill he has won games for the Bulldogs F.A. and the National Team of Costa Rica. Chacon just returned for this game after reconstructive knee surgery. He definitely demonstrated to his teammates that he has fully recovered and can now kick even further!
Toros F.C. Owned The 4th Quarter
The Bulldogs F.A. had a bad snap on a punt being kicked from their own end zone which turned into a safety to give the Toros F.C. two more points. Points were racked up for the Toros F.C. with two rushing touchdowns, one for 8 yards by RB Israel Bañuelos and the next for 2 yards by QB Scott Doherty. Both extra points failed. QB Scott Doherty made a 3 yard pass to RB/WR Ivan Araya who planted the games final score as the point after touchdown failed. Final: Bulldogs F.A. 27 > Toros F.C. 26
RB Israel Bañuelas #20
“ I have played two seasons as running back with the Toros F.C. I am Mexican but I live in Costa Rica since two years ago. I played football three seasons in Mexico when I was a youth. Before I started to play with the Toros F.C. I used to run 100 and 200mts in athletics on a high performance team. I love to run and I always train to perform my technique to run better and faster. I think that this background has enhanced me to develop my football position. Football has given me a lot, like happiness, health, discipline, commitment, teamwork, and friends! “
RB/WR Ivan Araya #26
“ I learned about American football when I lived in the US but for the most part learned to play in Costa Rica. I have played six seasons all as running back and slot receiver. Toros F.C. has always been my team since they "drafted" me. I like the team competitiveness and the way we respect and challenge each other. You don’t
get that in every team.”

COSTA RICA LEAGUES
Since the inception of ‘organized’ American football in Costa Rica during the year of 2009, the sport has seen its fair share of growing pains.
This is an attempt to dispel the confusion about the history of the leagues in Costa Rica and describe the two functioning leagues which currently operate in this Central American country.
Initially the 1st Division teams were organized into the private FCFA: Costa Rican Federation of American Football (2009-2010). (Super Tazon I & II)
Then, when the FEFACR: Federación de Fútbol Americano de Costa Rica (IFAF member league registered in 2009) achieved recognition by induction into the ICODER: Costa Rican Institute of Sports & Recreation, it hosted the first ‘official’ National Championship in 2011 for 1st Division teams, and again in the following two consecutive years. (Super Tazon III, IV & V)
The private American Football Premier Division League (AFPDL) was in essence a cooperative league formed at the beginning of 2014 by the 1st Division teams of 2013. The league hosted its own Championship calendar in 2014 and disbanded shortly after the Championship. (Super Tazon VI)
After the disbandment of the AFPDL, 2015 saw the establishment of the private NTFL: National Tico Football League that had started to take form towards the end of 2014 with the majority of the 1st Division teams under its banner. The league, with five teams, is well underway playing its 1st Championship calendar that commenced on February 8th, and is set to introduce a ‘new’ Championship title on May 3rd.
Now turning our attention back to the FEFACR league, it just kicked off the 2015 National Championship 1st Division calendar on February 28th, boasting two original teams since the sport was organized in Costa Rica, and two new fledgling teams.
