The 2013 American Football Federation of Costa Rica (FEFACR) National Championship game season commenced on February 2nd and proceeded to host a 10 week (2 bye week per team) calendar with the semi-final game thereafter on April 21st. The Toros Football Club achieved an impressive 8-0 shut out winning streak and were then granted a bye week while waiting to see who their challenger would be for the Championship game.
The Santa Ana Bulldogs won the semi-final against the Santo Domingo Saints reaching a 7-2 standing going into the Super Bowl V of Costa Rica on April 27th. The Toros led this game from the start with a 28-7 win over the Bulldogs ending the dawgs 3 peat championship reign. The Bulldogs posted a 7-3 final standing. The Toros finished the season 9-0 as winners of the National Championship trophy.
The Bulldogs had only two weeks to rest before they suited up to play against the USA Patriots (semi-pro) Chicago based players, on May 11th at the ULatina Campus, located in Heredia. The USA Patriots defeated the Bulldogs 68-6.
The Bulldogs, for that game day, also fielded five players from the Panthers, ULatina, the first university American football team in Costa Rica. The Bulldogs introduced their team kicker, Nacho Gonzalez, a grade 11 student. The USA Patriots players were impressed with his skill.
MVP's for the USA Patriots were Ike Gutieriez for Defense and Danny Sanez for Offense.
Just one week later, on May 18th the American football intrigue returned to the familiar Cuty Monge Stadium for the Tropic Bowl 3, organized in association with the NGO Athletes Without Borders.
The National Team of Costa Rica played a fast-paced and action-packed game against the New England All*Stars (semi-pro) Boston based players. New England took the win 36-6.
The day started with a youth and adults’ training clinic consisting of practice drills and nutritional counseling, stressing the importance of making healthy eating choices to manage an appropriate weight. The day continued with a full contact exhibition game between the two U-19 teams of Costa Rica, the Cartago Dragons Football Jrs and the Titans Jrs with the CDF Jrs taking the win 20-8.
This was the first time these two opposing teams met this year since their back-to-back games last December when the Titans Jrs won both games. The Titans Jrs achieved their revenge at that time, after losing to the CDF Jrs in the previous August game.
History repeated itself at the 2013 FEFACR U-19 National Championship games held respectively on August 10th and 17th when the CDF Jrs seized both game wins and were awarded the Championship trophy.
QB, Santiago Campos, was awarded the MVP trophy.
Aside from a few postseason independent games organized to give those developing teams expecting to enter the 2014 FEFACR National Championship game season situation experience, the league had its offseason focus set on the 1st Central American Bowl.
